Hey I’m so excited to see this on my dash! I work at an independent bookstore in NY and we were hit insanely hard by the pandemic, like so many other indie bookstores across the country. Bookshop has literally been helping us to keep the lights on. You using stores’ affiliate links to bookshop (you can support my store here) or just browsing it on your own directly impacts our ability to remain in business. Overall Bookshop has raised over 10 million dollars for independent bookstores across America. This site really works!

If you want to buy books from the comfort of your own home without supporting Amazon, please please consider using Bookshop! We are all so thankful for your support!

“Oh, this is fabulous. A new online platform, Bookshop, has created a centralized online shopping platform for independent bookstores around the country. Quarantine doesn’t mean you have to resort to Amazon.”

Did you know? Or did you forget? You can do whatever you want with your art. Put random scribbles wherever. Horizontal lines over your character. Add dots everywhere and on everything. Draw eyes different than the rest of the face. Change art styles halfway through. Cut and glue paper cutouts. Use paints and markers together. Use all the filters. Use photos on top to add texture.

You can do what you want. Like literally literally literally.

Add a rubber ducky in the corner for no reason, put text in different languages on the background, leave your handprints or wipe your fingers on the paper.

Go have fun now this stuff isn't meant to be stressful for you

please stop scrolling for a moment and read.

this happened on wednesday in occupied jerusalem, supposedly the "only democracy in middle east."

israeli police raided the anti-zionist jewish neighborhood, to attack any symbol of jewish solidarity with Palestine, took down the Palestinian flag, brutally assaulted anti-zionist jews by knocking them down on the road, hitting them, and punching them in the face.

zionism is a violent and fascist ideology that doesn't even spare the very people it is supposed to protect. anyone who disagrees with its racist mandate, even jews, are targeted by the entity that falsely claims to represent jewish people.

if they can do this to their own, can you even bear to imagine how they have treated, and continue to treat, Palestinians? except you don't really have to - idf soldiers have, on multiple occasions, documented their own war crimes and violations of the very nature of being human. they have gloated over their own capacity to commit undeniable evil too many times on camera.

does amy schumer care about these people standing up against genocide and getting persecuted for doing so? what does noah schnapp have to say?

what do well-off white jews in the west who record tiktoks with a face full of makeup, impeccably manicured nails, curated fits and ring lights, who have monopolized claims to antisemitism and grief and victimhood while black and other non-white jewish people have been rendered almost entirely invisible from public memory, have to say about this?

israel was never about judaism.

"I would never-"

You would if you were tired enough. You would if you were hungry enough. You would if your mind and body had been worn down enough, through pain or disease or toil or violent struggle. You might if you were put on the wrong medicine, or you got the wrong kind of head injury, or you were forced to choose between someone else and yourself. You might if your livelihood was staked on it, or all your hopes and dreams. You might if you didn't know what else to do, if it's what you were taught or if nobody taught you anything else.

I have not been worn down in most of these ways. I have lived a remarkably privileged life. But I have been worn down in some ways. And they were enough to teach me that in the wrong circumstances, any of us can become someone we don't want to be. It's worth keeping that in mind.

It takes so much fight to resist.

It takes even more to get an honest reflection from someone else to help you fight yourself from becoming someone you don't like.

It's worth it. Keep fighting.

In the same way that there's a trend of writing emotional dialogue in therapized language in books, I'm also seeing a trend of people writing about race, gender, sexual/romantic orientation, etc. in very Social Justice ways that often don't reflect how a character of that actual background/demographic would talk about that identity.

Your characters should talk about things the way that that character would talk about it, not whatever is being passed around as the ideal "unproblematic" version of talking about something on Tumblr or TikTok on any given day.

What about when a character, who belongs to certain race, gender, who has romantic/sexual orientation...acts like a-hole? Or is evil, but race, gender, sexual orientation has NOTHING to do with the character acting like evil and/or a-hole?

For example a half-vampire guy who is bisexual, sly, intelligent, materialistic, manipulative and is kind of combination of Don Corleone and Cassanova. He is the richest man in his villaige and great manipulator. While he can be very generous to those who are loyal to him (people who work for him, support him or who he dates)...he wont hestiate to massacre his enemies. Yes, he is BI but he is not opressed and really dont care if people hate him because of his sexuality...or because he is a half-vampire.

elumish

I'm not actually sure if you mean this as a question, but I'm going to treat it as though you do, as is my wont.

I want to start by saying that every person belongs to a certain (or more than one) race and gender and has a/some romantic/sexual roientation. This is not a criticism of your wording in particular, but I think it's super important to keep in mind that white, male, cis, and straight are no less races/genders/gender identities/sexual/romantic orientations than Black, female, trans, or bi (etc.). It's not like bi is an add-on, like being bi means that you have a romantic/sexual orientation when being straight doesn't.

That said, characters with marginalized identities are allowed to be assholes. They are allowed to be mean, they are allowed to be annoying, they are allowed to be obnoxious, they are allowed to be unpleasant, they are allowed to be evil.

What you generally want to avoid, though, is having that be your only instance of that identity. If your only bi character sucks, it's different than if one of your bi characters sucks. And this is not to say that we're in a Noah's arc, we need two of every identity, situation. It doesn't need to be prescriptive. But you should take care to consider whether your villain/enemy/awful character is also your only character with that marginalized identity/identities.

Some of this also depends on to what degree the awfulness/dislikeability feeds into the stereotypes about that identity. An overly cold/distant bi character isn't feeding into bi stereotypes the same way a bi character who cheats on their spouse is.
